I had a smart roadster. My first paddle car . You want gear lag. Try that !!. I learnt it after a while, but you literally pulled down change 2 seconds before the key moment .It almost became a laugh in itself. But being tiny it was a hoot.

Great build Ped, really "exciting". One thing that looks fundamentally wrong is the floor steel sitting on the end of 4x vertical timbers? 🤯 Surely the steel would either have to be nit into the outer wall or you build a brick peer for each steel? Surprised that got passed building control. Would not be happy with that. A serious amount of weight bearing down on that timber wall. Maybe the steel is nit into the wall and you didnt mention it?

Having driven (finally) the G87 M2, I really can not warm to it. What make the OG M2 such a great car (in my opinion), have been toned down for this model. The extra power is not really as noticeable due to the extra weight, and that extra weight makes the steering less nimble, the turn in more numb, and just takes a lot away from the OG's playful driving dynamics. This G87 is really NOT that playful, compared to the OG. I think you should spend an afternoon with an OG M2 on some nice roads (yes you are more than welcome to take mine). I really didn't like the seats Pete, they look good, but they are not as comfortable as the OG's seats. The dash is horrible, no BMW fan is going to prefer a cheap plastic screen over two driver focussed analogue dails. I don't mind the exterior looks, although it isn't as pretty as the OG, it doesn't look 'bad' to my eyes, but it could never be described as a pretty car. I have looked at getting finance on one, but I actually prefer the driving dynamics of my playful OG M2. Power isn't everything, and although on paper it appears a lot faster, in reality it isn't noticeably quicker in the real world. The G87 is between 150kg and 180kg heavier than the OG (depending on spec of both), and that is quite a lot 🙂 It seems to be a safer car, but to me, I would prefer an M car to be playful, and not a GT cruiser, which this seems to be. Half the sound is fake, piped in through the speakers, although it was in the 10 year older OG too, just not as noticeable as the actual exhaust sounded so much louder and nicer with the N55.

What a great video, many thanks for filming and editing this, looks a lot of work. The tour of the Penske garage was my favorite part, Roger Penske is a motor sports icon. Would be interesting to see a helicopter video when it is not the race weekend, looks like it is still a busy area. Being a Toyota GR Corolla owner, I wanted Gazoo to win, but was not to be, but great that they were so competitive.

Great vid,I had the manual as courtesy car 4 months, nice on B Roads, I hated it in traffic, my order aft much deliberation was the V6 Auto, zero interest in the AMG for me, I don't track but do daily it and touring, I can honestly say when my v6 auto arrived I knew it was the right choice for me and I love it, I came out of Panemera GTS 4.8 ltr v8 with PDK, PDK is the best box by far, but the v6 auto box is good enough, paddle shift fast enough, faster than I can change a manual and for me the noise as the auto down shifts sounds amazing and you don't get the same from the manual, I get why most want a manual but I prefer autos, if anyone is deliberating about manual or V6 auto I honestly would t hesitate if it's an auto you want, I daily mine, I have no issues, the drama is epic, response from people great, lots sly photos n videos being taken, had no negatives, mine is Yellow , Black Pack, Red Leather, it gives that exotic look 😎👍

Is it just me or is the head rest angled too far forward for comfort?

I think the reason not many production vehicles have rear doors like that is because the front edge of the door and its latching mechanism have to be strong enough to act as a surrogate for the missing 'B' pillar. The 'B' pillar is vital in giving the body shell its resistance to side impacts. Doors are expensive to make anyway, and the extra functionality here must increase the cost considerably. Also, to get a reasonable vertical spacing between the hinges of the rear doors, the pivot point has to be well forward of the intrusion of the rear wheel arch - hence the small size of the doors. Re: miles per kWh, on anything other than short journeys with minimal intervention from the IC engine, this is largely irrelevant. On a long journey once the initial charge has been exhausted, the battery is purely acting as a buffer to help the IC engine run at the best possible efficiency, so the mpg figure is more relevant. Sorry for yet another issue. The car is nearly as heavy as a Tesla Model Y, and nearly as expensive - but not as practical for transporting more than two people. I wish I could find a positive reason for liking the car, but I think Mazda might have backed a loser here.

I belive the latest Honda Civic does the same thing, the only difference beeing the petrol engine is not rotary. But Honda has a larger tank and a more reasonable range.

Last car I bought new was in 2000, a Mondeo 1.8. Adjusted for inflation that would now cost £25k. I won’t be buying a new car anytime soon.

Ped. An excellent and balanced review (so many devour this car and its full EV sibling). I have owned the MX30 full EV for the past 2 years and the majority of my travels are inter county (Ireland) and I have also owned an RX8 so just a few thought and observations. The MX30 is ideal for me as the majority of the time it is just myself in the car and occasionally +1. Any prospective buyers should avoid the electric front seats if there are going to be rear passengers and if rear passengers are going to be a regular occurrence give serious thought to your final purchase. In reality with non aggressive driving the summer range is 180kms (110miles) and winter drops to 160kms (100miles) so for the Rotary I’d expect half these values on pure EV. In relation to regenerative braking I toggle between normal and minimum and let inertia move the car along (a lot of my journeys is on B roads with undulating roads). The ride on the MX30 is indeed as you say really good and I test drove some notable brands when deciding and it excelled - it doesn’t have that “boat” feeling. Because of the overall weight you are spot on with about 3.6 miles/kw. Having had an RX8 the scary reality of rotary ownership would make me somewhat anxious but your assessment of why they all pretty much failed is a very valid point…my RX is currently at the rear of the shed with the engine in trays and corners..it will never run again😢 (and I have built many piston engines since). One thing I had hoped you would have told us was how long it took to get back to the 70% charge from 43%..I think it was…by my calculations that would be a requirement of approximately 5kw (ish) so your normal home wall box would need about 45mins to charge…I am wondering what is the electrical power output from the rotary?

Vehicle manufacturers need to be more honest about the real world range/mpg (for all vehicles).

What is the least costly version. if the cost can drop down to 30 pounds this concept sounds good.

I have a 2017 msport had it from new now got 60,000miles on it and ive drove non stop to south spain with no problems. I would say though that the wetbelts are a problem and the recall doesnt fix the problem. They change the belt and i will then last another 60,000miles £1500 to replace. And i know because ive just had my belt checked at fords and the told me it started delaminating and if the belt breaks up it block the oil getting round the engine and will seize the engine. I checked the price for recon engine and its about £5000 fitted. So change the belts at 60,000 or risk the engine.

As a 225 308SW owner - on say a journey of 100 miles, start with a full battery but use the on-board sat nav to get you there. In hybrid mode, the car will average out and best utilise the battery range. In the warmer months on an 80 mile A-road trip, my 308Sw has never shown less than 86mpg

You get your money's worth at those endurance races, I go to them in the USA, Daytona Rolex 24, Sebring 12hr. and Road Atlanta 10hr., 60 cars,multiclass racing is the BEST ! WEC is coming to Austin, Texas, this year.

Squint; and this could be a Soul MkIII; however 3.7 Miles/KWh isnt that impressive - I have the original Soul EV, and average 4.6, living in a VERY hilly area; and still manage 3.9-4.4 on long motorway journeys. Kia talk a lot about their recycled content; if they want to maximise their green credentials, they need to take a "Leaf" from Nissan, and ensure old cars can be upgraded with the newer battery packs over time; a 40 or 50KWh battery for my car would transform it into a Grand Tourer I could take across Europe; but sadly, I am struck with ~100 miles of safe range. I also think the charger location on the original Soul was better; especially as charger bays will become busier over time, as more EVs hit the roads; a central location means you can reach chargers either side in shared bay charger locations; I have met people who couldnt charge their car due to the one bay being occupied and the cable not reaching from the other bay; whereas I could pull up in the same bay and have the cable easily reach.
